MECP Master Spotlight: Tomáas Hernandez Mendoza
MECP is proud to introduce its first Master Installation Technician in Mexico

With over 15 years of experience and having started in 12 Volt with only a bag of tools and plenty of ambition, Tomás Hernandez Mendoza recently became the first ever MECP Master Installation Technician in Mexico. MECP staff recently talked with Tomás about the state of 12 Volt in Mexico and his plans to help raise the quality of installation in the country.

Tomás started out providing a much needed service for the Mexican market installing simple anti-carjacking systems into vehicles. Without a store and traveling from customer to customer, Tomás quickly learned that the key to succeeding in the 12 Volt business was quality installation services. After searching for experts to learn from, Tomás was able to take a training course with Juan Castillo Ortiz in 2000 that ignited a passion within him to pursue quality installation above all else.

Tomás honed his installation skills by competing and winning in a number of SPL competitions including events hosted by USACI, IASCA, and dB Drag. As the industry exploded in popularity, Tomás increasingly noticed vehicles with thousands of dollars worth of equipment installed poorly. Not content to sit on his hands, Tomás took to the Internet and found several mentors on the 12VoltInsider Forum who taught him the ins and outs of installation technique and even running a small business.

Tomás then took this new-found knowledge to one of Best Buy's newly opened stores in Polanco, Mexico where he earned his MECP Master Installation Technician certification in December 2009. Since then, Tomás has again struck out on his own - even appearing in the Mexican version of the hit TV show West Coast Customs. The seven-episode season wrapped up recently.

As for what's next, even Tomás isn't sure, but according to Tomás, becoming a Master Installers has opened many doors for him to continue to improve the quality of 12 Volt installation in Mexico for years to come. For 2011 and beyond, Tomás wants to get involved with training other technicians in Mexico to help elevate the awareness of 12 volt installation as a viable career path through MECP certification.
